Boston Power has set its sights on dominating the lithium-ion battery market in China after announcing $125million in new funding in the country.
The growth capital and Chinese government incentives will be used mainly to scale manufacturing, research and development; as well as to boost business development activities for the company’s energy storage technology and products.
Much of the investment was led by GSR Ventures, which invests primarily in early stage and growth stage technology companies with substantial operations in China. The Chinese government also provided a range of grants, low-interest loans and tax incentives.
Now, Boston Power will establish a research and development and electric vehicle battery engineering facility in China that will build on its current technology. It will also build an advanced manufacturing facility in the country capable of producing 400MWh of lithium-ion battery cells annually by the end of 2012.
